AMD Accelerates GPU Energy Efficiency for Gaming PCs

In August 2016, AMD released a carbon footprint study that evaluated the flagship Radeon™ RX 480 GPU, compared to the previous generation Radeon™ R9 390 GPU.

The assessment assumed a “typical use” scenario of a gaming PC, according to previous research, and measured the corresponding electricity use.

The associated greenhouse gas emission estimates (also called “GHG” or “carbon” emissions) were independently reviewed and validated by a third party, Pure Strategies.

The study concludes that upgrading a gaming PC from a Radeon™ R9 390 GPU to a Radeon™ RX 480 GPU provides a 40 percent reduction in energy use and carbon emissions from the active gaming mode, and a 32 percent overall GHG reduction for the gaming PC daily usage model.

These energy and emission improvements are derived through a combination of architectural enhancements, intelligent circuit design and enhancements from more advanced manufacturing technology.

Upgrading a gaming PC with the AMD Radeon R9 390 GPU to the AMD Radeon RX 480 GPU reduces annual electricity use while actively gaming from approximately 642 kWh to 385 kWh (~40% change) and accross all use modes from approximately 929 kWh to approximately 633 kWh (~32% change).   3. The US EPA Greenhouse Gas Equivalency calculator estimates an equivalent of using 888 kWh is driving an average passenger 1,496 miles. The driving distance from Berlin, Germany to Madrid, Spain is 1,444 miles, or 2.325 kilometers. []
  4. The US EPA Greenhouse Gas Equivalency calculator estimates that using 888 kWh is equivalent to burning 666 pounds, or 302 kilograms, of coal.
